What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Playa Hermosa?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Playa Hermosa if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Playa Hermosa, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making negative comments about the country or its people, as Costa Ricans are very proud of their heritage. It's also considered rude to refuse food or drink when offered by a local. Even if you're not hungry or thirsty, it's polite to accept a small amount. When visiting the beach, remember to clean up after yourself. Littering is frowned upon and can result in fines. In Costa Rica, punctuality is not as strictly observed as in some other cultures. However, it's still important to be respectful of others' time. If you're running late, make sure to let the other party know. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics and religion, unless you're very familiar with the person you're talking to. Lastly, remember to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas. While beachwear is acceptable on the beach, it's not appropriate in other public places. In general, the key to avoiding cultural faux pas in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica, is to be respectful, considerate, and mindful of local customs and traditions," commented one expat who made the move to Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.
