What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in River Valley?

Answer this Question

We asked people in River Valley if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In River Valley, it's important to respect the diverse cultures and religions. Avoid making insensitive comments about race, religion, or nationality, as Singapore is a multicultural society. When visiting religious sites, dress modestly and follow the rules of the place. For instance, in mosques, women are expected to cover their heads, and in temples, shoes are often not allowed. Avoid littering as Singapore has strict laws against it. Chewing gum is also banned in the country, so refrain from bringing it into Singapore. When using public transport, do not eat or drink. It's also polite to offer your seat to the elderly, pregnant women, or those with disabilities. In Singapore, it's considered rude to point with your foot or to touch someone's head, as the head is considered sacred. When dining, wait to be told where to sit, as there may be a seating arrangement. Also, if you're using chopsticks, don't stick them upright in your bowl, as this is considered bad luck. Lastly, always ask for permission before taking photos of people or private property," remarked another expat who made the move to River Valley, Singapore.
