What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Discovery Bay?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Discovery Bay if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"When visiting Discovery Bay, avoid wearing camouflage clothing, as it is reserved for military personnel. Refrain from using offensive language or gestures in public, as it is considered disrespectful. Do not assume that everyone smokes marijuana, as it is still illegal and not everyone partakes. Avoid touching or patting people's heads, as it is considered disrespectful. Be mindful of personal space and avoid standing too close to others. Do not take photographs of people without their permission, as it may be considered intrusive. Be respectful of local customs and traditions, and avoid making negative comments about the country or its people. When dining, wait to be seated and do not start eating until everyone has been served. Finally, be cautious when discussing politics or religion, as these topics can be sensitive for some individuals," said another expat in Discovery Bay, Jamaica.
