What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Daegu?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Daegu if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Daegu, it is considered rude to blow your nose in public, especially at the dining table. Avoid touching someone, especially someone of the opposite sex, unless you are very close or intimate with them. It's also considered impolite to make direct eye contact with elders or superiors as it can be seen as a challenge or disrespect. When eating, wait for the eldest person to start eating before you do. It's also important to remember not to leave chopsticks sticking upright in a bowl of rice, as this is associated with funerals. Avoid pointing with your finger, instead use your whole hand to gesture. It's also considered rude to write someone's name in red ink, as it symbolizes death. When giving or receiving anything, use both hands or your right hand with your left hand touching your right elbow as a sign of respect. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, North Korea, and the Korean War. Koreans are very proud of their culture and heritage, so any negative comments or jokes about their country or culture can be taken as a personal insult. Lastly, remember to take off your shoes when entering someone's home or certain traditional restaurants. This is a common practice in Korea and not doing so is considered disrespectful," wrote a member who made the move to Daegu, Korea.
