What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Las Lajas?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Las Lajas if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Las Lajas, it's important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid making negative comments about the country, its people, or its culture, as Panamanians are very proud of their heritage. Panamanians are generally conservative in their dress, so it's best to avoid wearing revealing clothing, especially in rural areas or when visiting religious sites. It's considered rude to interrupt someone while they're speaking, so always wait for your turn to speak. Similarly, maintain eye contact when speaking to someone as it's a sign of respect and sincerity. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or personal matters unless you are very close with the person. It's also considered impolite to ask about someone's salary or personal finances. Panamanians value punctuality, so try to be on time for appointments or social gatherings. However, understand that the concept of time can be more relaxed in Panama, so don't be surprised if locals are late. Avoid littering or damaging the environment. Panamanians take pride in their beautiful natural landscapes and expect visitors to respect them as well. Lastly, always ask for permission before taking photos of locals, especially indigenous people. It's a matter of respect and privacy," explained one expat living in Las Lajas, Panama.
