What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Rabigh?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Rabigh if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Rabigh, it is important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered inappropriate and disrespectful. Do not criticize or make negative comments about the Saudi royal family, government, or Islam, as this is considered highly offensive and could lead to legal problems. Avoid showing the soles of your feet or shoes, as this is considered disrespectful. Similarly, do not use your left hand to eat, give or receive items, as it is considered unclean. Dress modestly, especially in public places. Women should cover their hair, arms, and legs. Men should avoid wearing shorts in public. Do not consume alcohol or pork, as they are forbidden in Islam. Also, during the holy month of Ramadan, do not eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight hours out of respect for those who are fasting. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, and sex. Do not take photographs of people, especially women, without their permission. It is also illegal to photograph government buildings, military installations, and palaces. Remember that Friday is the Islamic holy day, so many businesses will be closed. Always ask permission before entering a mosque, and remember to remove your shoes before entering. Do not bring any items that are considered haram (forbidden) in Islam into the country, such as pork products, alcohol, or illicit drugs. Finally, always show respect and patience. The pace of life in Saudi Arabia can be slower than what you may be used to, and showing frustration or impatience is considered rude," remarked another expat in Rabigh, Saudi Arabia.
