What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Al Lith?
We asked people in Al Lith if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...
"In Al Lith, it is important to respect the local customs and traditions. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are considered inappropriate and disrespectful. It is also considered impolite to refuse an invitation to someone's home. Do not criticize or make negative comments about the Saudi royal family, government, or Islam, as this can be considered offensive and even illegal. Always dress modestly, especially women, who are expected to wear an abaya (a loose-fitting black cloak) in public. Avoid using your left hand for eating or giving and receiving items, as it is considered unclean. Do not take photographs of people, especially women, without their permission. It is also considered disrespectful to show the soles of your shoes or feet. Alcohol is strictly prohibited in Saudi Arabia, so do not drink or carry it in public. During the holy month of Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect for those who are fasting. Remember to respect the call to prayer, which happens five times a day. During this time, many businesses will close for prayer, and you should refrain from eating, drinking, or playing loud music. Lastly, always ask for permission before entering a mosque, and women should cover their heads before entering," wrote a member who made the move to Al Lith, Saudi Arabia.
