What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Alicante. They wrote...

"Expats in Alicante often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and a basic understanding of Spanish is necessary for day-to-day life. The Spanish concept of time, which is more relaxed and less punctual than in other cultures, can also be difficult for expats to adjust to. Additionally, the siesta, a traditional afternoon break, can disrupt work schedules and shopping hours, which can be frustrating for those not used to this custom. The local diet, which is heavy in seafood and pork, may also be a challenge for those with dietary restrictions or preferences. Lastly, navigating the Spanish bureaucracy, which is known for its complexity and slow pace, can be a significant challenge for expats, particularly when dealing with legal or administrative matters," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Alicante, Spain.
