What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Koh Lanta. They wrote...

"Expats in Koh Lanta often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Thai is a tonal language and can be difficult to learn, making communication with locals a challenge. Another challenge is the difference in pace of life. The Thai culture is much more laid back and slower paced than what many expats are used to, which can lead to frustrations when trying to get things done quickly. Understanding and adapting to the local customs and etiquette can also be challenging. For example, it is considered disrespectful to touch someone's head or to point your feet at someone. The heat and humidity can also be a challenge for expats not used to tropical climates. Lastly, the local cuisine can be a challenge for some expats, especially those with dietary restrictions or those who are not used to spicy food," remarked another expat in Koh Lanta, Thailand.
