What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Armenia. They wrote...
"Expats in Armenia may find the language barrier to be one of the most challenging aspects of the local culture, as Spanish is the primary language spoken and not everyone speaks English. They might also struggle with adapting to the local customs and traditions, such as the importance of family and close-knit communities, which can make it difficult for them to integrate and form connections with locals. Another challenge could be adjusting to the Colombian concept of time, which is more relaxed and flexible than in many Western countries. This can lead to frustration when dealing with punctuality and scheduling. Additionally, expats may find it difficult to navigate the local bureaucracy and legal system, which can be complex and time-consuming. Safety and security concerns can also be challenging for expats in Armenia, as Colombia has a history of crime and violence, although the situation has improved significantly in recent years. Expats may need to take extra precautions and be aware of their surroundings to ensure their safety. Finally, adapting to the local cuisine and dietary habits can be a challenge for some expats, as Colombian food is quite different from what they may be used to in their home countries. It may take time for them to adjust to the local flavors and ingredients, as well as the typical meal times and eating habits," explained one expat living in Armenia, Colombia.
