"Expats in Salento often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and a basic understanding of Spanish is necessary for day-to-day interactions. The slower pace of life can also be a challenge for those accustomed to a more fast-paced, structured lifestyle. Additionally, adjusting to the local customs and traditions, such as late-night socializing and the importance of family gatherings, can be difficult for some. The lack of certain amenities and conveniences that they might be used to from their home countries, such as high-speed internet or a wide variety of international cuisine, can also pose challenges. Lastly, understanding and navigating the local bureaucracy for things like visas, housing, and utilities can be complex and time-consuming," commented one expat who made the move to Salento, Colombia.
