What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Atenas. They wrote...
"Expats in Atenas often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and it can be difficult to communicate without a basic understanding of Spanish. The slower pace of life, known as "Tico time", can also be a challenge for those used to a more fast-paced, punctual lifestyle. Additionally, the local customs and etiquette may be different from what expats are used to, which can lead to misunderstandings or cultural faux pas. The lack of certain amenities and conveniences that they might be used to from their home countries can also be a challenge. Lastly, adjusting to the local cuisine, which is different from typical Western food, can be a challenge for some expats," explained one expat living in Atenas, Costa Rica.
