What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Bahia de Caraquez. They wrote...

"Expats in Bahia de Caraquez often find it challenging to navigate the language barrier, as Spanish is the main language spoken. Additionally, locals tend to adhere to a more leisurely schedule, which can take some getting used to for those accustomed to more urgent deadlines and more structured schedules. Cultural norms such as speaking modestly and graciously are also expected, and having an awareness of local customs and traditions is important to become accepted into the community. Finally, expats may struggle with the lack of reliable public transport, which can make getting around difficult," said a member in Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador, Ecuador.

"We are struggling with the language but that is getting better on a daily basis. Sometimes you think of what you were planning to say but it is later than you wanted to say it. People still talk to you like you understand, but they are patient and they don't get angry because you cannot speak their language," remarked another expat who made the move to Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador.
