What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Canaries. They wrote...
"Expats in Canaries often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as the primary language spoken is a French-based Creole, known as Patois. This can make everyday tasks such as shopping, communicating with locals, and understanding local customs and traditions difficult. Another challenge is adapting to the slower pace of life, which is a stark contrast to the fast-paced lifestyle many expats are used to. This can be particularly challenging when dealing with administrative tasks or business matters, which may not be handled as quickly as they would be in other countries. Understanding and respecting local customs and traditions can also be a challenge for expats. Saint Lucia has a rich cultural heritage with unique traditions and customs that may be unfamiliar to newcomers. The island's infrastructure can also pose a challenge, as it may not be as developed as what expats are used to. This can affect various aspects of life, from transportation to healthcare services. Lastly, while Saint Lucia is generally safe, crime can be a concern in certain areas. Expats may need to take extra precautions to ensure their safety, which can be a significant adjustment," remarked another expat in Canaries, Saint Lucia.
