What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Naxos. They wrote...
"Expats in Naxos often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Greek is a difficult language to learn and not everyone on the island speaks English, which can make everyday tasks like shopping or asking for directions more difficult. Another challenge is adjusting to the slower pace of life. Greeks value leisure and socializing, and businesses often close in the afternoon for a few hours. This can be frustrating for expats who are used to a more fast-paced, 24/7 lifestyle. Understanding and navigating the local bureaucracy can also be a challenge. Dealing with paperwork and official procedures can be confusing and time-consuming, especially for those who are not fluent in Greek. The Greek concept of time, known as "Greek time", can also be a challenge for expats. This refers to the cultural norm where punctuality is not highly valued and events often start later than scheduled. Lastly, while Greeks are generally warm and hospitable, it can take time to be fully accepted into the local community. This can make it difficult for expats to form deep connections and feel at home," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Naxos, Greece.
