What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Utila. They wrote...
"Expats in Utila often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Spanish is the primary language spoken and not everyone is fluent in English. The slower pace of life, known as "island time", can also be a challenge for those accustomed to a more fast-paced, punctual lifestyle. Additionally, the lack of certain amenities and services that they may be used to in their home countries, such as high-speed internet or a wide variety of shopping options, can be difficult to adjust to. Some expats also find it challenging to navigate the local bureaucracy, which can be complex and time-consuming. Lastly, while many locals are friendly and welcoming, cultural differences and misunderstandings can sometimes lead to feelings of isolation or exclusion among expats," remarked another expat who made the move to Utila, Honduras.
