What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Vestmannaeyjar. They wrote...
"Expats in Vestmannaeyjar may find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Icelandic is a difficult language to learn and is predominantly spoken in the area. The isolation of the island can also be challenging, as it can feel remote and disconnected from the rest of the world. The harsh weather conditions, particularly in winter, can be difficult to adapt to, especially for those from warmer climates. The local diet, which heavily features seafood and fermented foods, may also be a challenge for some expats. Additionally, the small population size and close-knit community can make it difficult for newcomers to integrate and form social connections. Lastly, the high cost of living in Iceland can be a significant challenge for expats," wrote a member who made the move to Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.
