What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in kobe. They wrote...

"Expats in Kobe, Japan often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Japanese is a complex language with three different writing systems, and while some residents speak English, it is not widely spoken or understood. Another challenge is the deep-rooted tradition and etiquette in Japanese culture. There are many unspoken rules and social norms that foreigners may not be aware of, which can lead to misunderstandings or unintentional offense. The work culture in Japan can also be a significant challenge for expats. The Japanese are known for their strong work ethic, often working long hours and rarely taking time off. This can be a stark contrast to the work-life balance that many expats are used to. Japanese food culture can also be a challenge for some expats. While Kobe is famous for its beef, the local cuisine also includes a lot of seafood and raw food, which may not suit everyone's taste. Lastly, the high cost of living in Kobe can be a challenge for expats. Housing, in particular, can be expensive, and the overall cost of living is higher than in many other cities around the world," remarked another expat who made the move to kobe, Japan.
