What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Pyeongtaek. They wrote...
"Expats in Pyeongtaek often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and Korean can be difficult to learn. The hierarchical nature of Korean society, which is deeply ingrained in the culture, can also be difficult for expats to navigate. This is especially true in professional settings, where age and position often dictate the level of respect and deference one receives. Additionally, the concept of "saving face" is very important in Korean culture, and this can sometimes lead to indirect communication that expats may find confusing or frustrating. The food can also be a challenge for some, as Korean cuisine is quite distinct and can be very spicy. Lastly, the fast-paced lifestyle and long working hours common in Korea can be a significant adjustment for expats," said a member in Pyeongtaek, Korea.
