What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Ulsan. They wrote...
"Expats in Ulsan often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Korean is a difficult language to learn and not everyone in Ulsan speaks English, which can make everyday tasks like shopping or using public transportation difficult. Another challenge is the difference in social norms and etiquette. For instance, the importance of age and hierarchy in Korean society can be confusing and difficult to navigate for foreigners. Food can also be a challenge for some expats, as Korean cuisine is quite different from Western food and can be very spicy. Additionally, the work culture in Korea is very demanding, with long hours and high expectations, which can be a shock for expats used to a more balanced work-life culture. Lastly, the lack of diversity and the homogeneous nature of Korean society can make some expats feel isolated or out of place," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Ulsan, Korea.
