What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Suncheon. They wrote...
"Expats in Suncheon often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Korean is a complex language to learn, and while some locals may speak English, it is not widely spoken, especially among the older generation. Another challenge is the difference in social norms and etiquette. Korean culture places a strong emphasis on respect for elders and superiors, which can be difficult for expats to navigate if they are not familiar with the customs. Food can also be a challenge for some expats. Korean cuisine is quite distinct and can be very spicy, which may not suit everyone's palate. The work culture in Korea is also very different, with long working hours and a hierarchical structure that can be difficult for expats to adapt to. Lastly, the concept of "saving face" is deeply ingrained in Korean culture. This means that direct confrontation or criticism is often avoided, which can lead to misunderstandings or confusion for expats who are used to more direct communication," remarked another expat who made the move to Suncheon, Korea.
