What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Vientiane. They wrote...
"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Vientiane is the language barrier. English is not widely spoken, so it can be difficult to communicate with locals. Additionally, the local customs and traditions can be quite different from those of other countries, which can be difficult to adjust to. Furthermore, the pace of life in Vientiane is much slower than in other cities, which can be a challenge for those used to a faster-paced lifestyle. Finally, the cost of living in Vientiane is relatively low, so expats may find it difficult to find goods and services that are of the same quality as those in their home countries," said another expat in Vientiane, Laos.
"Learning Lao, shopping at the market for food, making sure the family is happy, getting my sense of direction (which is terrible)," wrote a member who made the move to Vientiane, Laos.
