What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Siargao. They wrote...
"Expats in Siargao may find the language barrier to be one of the most challenging aspects of the local culture, as the majority of the population speaks Visayan or Surigaonon, and while English is widely spoken, it may not be the first language for many locals. Another challenge could be adjusting to the slower pace of life, often referred to as 'island time', where things may not happen as quickly or efficiently as they are used to in their home countries. The lack of certain amenities and conveniences that they might be accustomed to in their home countries, such as high-speed internet, a wide variety of shopping options, or certain types of healthcare, can also be challenging. Understanding and respecting local customs and traditions can also pose a challenge, as it is important to show respect and not offend the local community. The tropical climate, while attractive to many, can also be a challenge for some expats, particularly during the rainy season when typhoons can occur. Finally, dealing with local bureaucracy and understanding the legal system, particularly for those who wish to start a business or buy property, can be complex and challenging," said a member in Siargao, Philippines.
