What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Coimbra. They wrote...

"Expats in Coimbra often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Portuguese is a difficult language to learn and not everyone speaks English. They may also struggle with the slower pace of life, which can be frustrating for those used to a faster, more efficient lifestyle. The bureaucracy in Portugal can be quite complex and time-consuming, which can be a challenge for expats trying to navigate things like visas, housing, and taxes. Additionally, some expats may find it difficult to integrate into the local community, as Portuguese people can be reserved and it can take time to build relationships. Lastly, while the cost of living is generally lower in Portugal compared to other European countries, salaries are also lower, which can be a challenge for expats used to a higher standard of living," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Coimbra, Portugal.
