Will I save money living in Okinawa?
We asked expats if they save money living in Okinawa. They said...
"The cost of living in Okinawa can be lower than in many parts of the United States, especially when it comes to housing and healthcare. Rent and property prices in Okinawa are generally cheaper than in major U.S. cities. Healthcare in Japan is also more affordable due to the country's universal healthcare system. However, some expenses may be higher in Okinawa. For instance, imported goods and certain food items can be more expensive due to import taxes and fees. Utilities such as electricity and gas can also be pricier in Okinawa than in the U.S. In terms of transportation, public transit is widely used in Okinawa and is relatively affordable, which could save you money compared to owning and maintaining a car in the U.S. However, if you choose to own a car in Okinawa, keep in mind that gas prices can be higher than in the U.S. Eating out in Okinawa can be cheaper than in the U.S., especially if you stick to local cuisine. However, if you frequently eat at western-style restaurants or buy imported groceries, your food costs could be higher. In summary, whether or not you save money living in Okinawa compared to the U.S. largely depends on your lifestyle and spending habits. If you adapt to a local way of living, you could potentially save money. However, if you maintain a western lifestyle, your cost of living could be similar to or higher than living in the U.S," wrote a member who made the move to Okinawa, Japan.
