The public healthcare system is often understaffed and under-resourced, leading to a lack of access to quality care for many residents. On the other hand, the private sector is growing rapidly, with a number of high-quality clinics and hospitals available, particularly in the capital city. However, these private facilities can be expensive, making them inaccessible to many Cambodians. Pharmacies are widespread throughout Phnom Penh, but the quality and availability of medications can vary. Counterfeit drugs are a significant problem in Cambodia, making it crucial for individuals to purchase medications from reputable sources. In terms of specialized care, such as dental or eye care, services are available but may not be up to the standards found in more developed countries. Many Cambodians and expatriates often travel to neighboring countries like Thailand or Vietnam for more complex procedures or treatments. Emergency services in Phnom Penh are limited. Ambulance services are available, but response times can be slow and the quality of care provided during transport is often poor. Many expatriates and wealthier Cambodians choose to use private emergency services, which are more reliable but also more expensive. Overall, while healthcare services in Phnom Penh are improving, they still lag behind those in more developed countries.
