What are healthcare services like in Vilcabamba?

Answer this Question

We asked retirees if they have access to good medical care in Vilcabamba. They wrote...

"Vilcabamba, is a small town known for its healthy lifestyle and beautiful scenery. The healthcare services in Vilcabamba are basic but adequate for minor health issues. The town has a few clinics and pharmacies where residents and visitors can receive medical attention. For more serious health concerns, people usually travel to the nearby city of Loja, which has a larger hospital and more specialized medical services. The doctors and medical staff in Vilcabamba are generally well-trained and many of them speak English, which is beneficial for the many expats living in the area. However, it's important to note that the healthcare facilities in Vilcabamba may not be as advanced or comprehensive as those in larger cities or more developed countries. Health insurance is highly recommended for those planning to stay in Vilcabamba for an extended period of time," wrote a member who made the move to Vilcabamba, Ecuador.

"There is a notional healthcare system called IESS where anyone can apply, pay around $80 a month and have healthcare. Also, many private insurance plans are available with access to quality private hospitals. The costs of medical services are much lower than in the US. An average simple surgery like hernia, appendectomy or varicose veins for example cost around $1500. Office visit with a specialist: $30 to $40," explained one expat living in Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
