What are healthcare services like in Chania?
We asked retirees if they have access to good medical care in Chania. They wrote...
"Healthcare services in Chania are generally of a high standard, with both public and private healthcare facilities available. The city is home to several hospitals and clinics, offering a range of medical services from general practice to specialized care. Public healthcare in Chania is funded by the Greek government and is available to all residents, including expatriates with a social security number. The public hospitals in Chania are well-equipped and staffed by highly trained medical professionals. However, they can be crowded and waiting times can be long for non-emergency treatments. On the other hand, private healthcare facilities in Chania offer faster service and more personalized care, but at a higher cost. Pharmacies are widely available throughout the city, and many are open 24 hours a day. They are well-stocked with both prescription and over-the-counter medications. Despite the high standard of healthcare in Chania, it is recommended that visitors and expatriates have comprehensive health insurance. This is because while emergency treatment is free, non-emergency treatment and certain specialized services may not be covered by the public healthcare system. In terms of mental health services, there are several psychologists and psychiatrists practicing in Chania, offering therapy and counseling services. However, mental health services are not as widely available or as well-funded as physical health services. Overall, while the healthcare system in Chania has its challenges, it provides a good level of care to its residents and visitors," remarked another expat in Chania, Greece.
