Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common, particularly in crowded places. Violent crime such as assault and robbery can also occur, although it is less common. Drug trafficking is another issue in the region due to its proximity to the Caribbean coast. However, the local authorities have been working hard to improve safety and security in the city. It's always recommended for visitors to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety," explained one expat living in Santa Marta, Colombia.
