What do I need to know before retiring in Puerto Lopez?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Puerto Lopez, they said...
"Before retiring in Puerto Lopez, expats should know that the cost of living is relatively low compared to many Western countries, making it an attractive option for retirees. The official language is Spanish, so learning the language or having a basic understanding would be beneficial. The healthcare system in Ecuador is quite good, but it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance plan. Puerto Lopez is a small fishing village, so it offers a slower pace of life which can be a significant change if you're used to living in a bustling city. The town is known for its beautiful beaches and national park, making it a great place for nature lovers. However, amenities that you may be used to, such as large shopping centers or a variety of restaurants, may not be as plentiful. The climate is tropical and humid, with a rainy season from December to May and a dry season from June to November. It's important to note that the infrastructure, including roads and public transportation, may not be as developed as in your home country. Ecuador uses the US dollar as its currency, which can make financial transitions easier for American retirees. It's also important to understand the visa requirements for long-term stay in Ecuador. Finally, while crime rates in Puerto Lopez are relatively low, petty crime such as pickpocketing can occur, so it's important to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect your belongings," wrote a member who made the move to Puerto Lopez, Ecuador.
