What do I need to know before retiring in Toulouse?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Toulouse, they said...

"Before retiring in Toulouse, expats should be aware that the cost of living can be quite high, especially in comparison to other parts of France. It's important to have a good understanding of the French healthcare system, which is considered one of the best in the world, but can be complex to navigate. Expats should also be aware that while many people in Toulouse speak English, it is not as common as in Paris or other major cities, so learning French will be beneficial. The city has a rich history and culture, with many museums, galleries, and historical sites to explore. Toulouse is known for its warm and sunny climate, but it can also get quite cold in the winter. The city is well-connected with an efficient public transportation system, but owning a car can be useful for exploring the surrounding countryside. French bureaucracy can be complex and time-consuming, so it's important to be patient and prepared when dealing with administrative tasks. Expats should also be aware of the French tax system, which can be quite different from what they are used to. Toulouse has a vibrant food and wine scene, with many local markets and restaurants offering regional specialties. The city is also home to a large number of expat communities, which can provide support and friendship for newcomers. Lastly, it's important to understand the French attitude towards work and leisure, which places a high value on enjoying life and spending time with family and friends. This can be a big adjustment for expats used to a more work-focused culture," remarked another expat who made the move to Toulouse, France.

"It is a big city and finding a place to live is fairly tricky (rent). However the weathers great and it is a nice place to live," explained one expat living in Toulouse, France.
