What do I need to know before retiring in Biarritz?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Biarritz, they said...
"Biarritz is a popular retirement destination for expats due to its beautiful beaches, mild climate, and vibrant culture. Before retiring in Biarritz, it's important to understand the cost of living, which can be higher than in other parts of France due to its popularity as a tourist destination. Healthcare in France is of a high standard, but expats should ensure they have adequate health insurance coverage. France has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with many countries, but it's important to check the specifics for your home country. Expats should also be aware of the tax implications of retiring in France. France has a complex tax system and it's recommended to seek advice from a tax professional. Language can be a barrier for some expats, as not everyone in Biarritz speaks English. Learning some basic French phrases can be helpful in day-to-day life. Biarritz has a strong sense of community and local culture. Expats should be prepared to immerse themselves in French customs and traditions. The city is well-connected with the rest of France and Europe, making it easy to travel. However, public transportation within Biarritz is limited, so having a car can be beneficial. Biarritz has a variety of housing options, from apartments to villas. It's recommended to visit Biarritz and explore different neighborhoods before deciding where to live. Finally, while Biarritz has a relatively low crime rate, it's still important to take standard safety precautions. It's also worth noting that the city can get crowded during the summer tourist season," said a member in Biarritz, France.

"I just returned from Biarritz as I met my fiance there from Ukraine. We loved it. The scale and charm of the city is what we like and of course the beaches and the ocean. We took a day trip to San Sebastian and it's enough for us to get that "Spanish" experience we might need on occasion. The aquarium is amazing, the food is awesome and the French people are very delightful, even if you are American)). Have no idea what it costs to rent a place, so need to research further. I would suspect if you live in nearby Bidart ( a bit south of Biarritz) it might cost less. Everything is walkable and the airport is fairly nearby. Grocery stores everywhere in town and the prices are great. Euros buys you more so don't worry about the exchange rate for dollars as it stands now. If we get Biden out of office, the dollar will get stronger again," remarked another expat who made the move to Biarritz, France.
