What do I need to know before retiring in Siena?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Siena, they said...

"Before retiring in Siena, expats should know that the cost of living can be quite high, especially when compared to other parts of Italy. The city is known for its rich history, beautiful architecture, and high quality of life, which can make it a more expensive place to live. Expats should also be aware that the healthcare system in Italy is generally very good, but it can be a bit complicated to navigate. It's important to have a good understanding of how the system works and what kind of health insurance coverage you'll need. Language can be a barrier for some expats, as not everyone in Siena speaks English. It's recommended to learn some basic Italian before moving, as it will make daily life and interactions with locals much easier. Siena is a small city, so if you're used to living in a large, bustling metropolis, you might find the pace of life slower. However, this can also be one of the city's charms, offering a more relaxed and peaceful lifestyle. The city is also known for its festivals, the most famous of which is the Palio, a horse race that takes place twice a year. These events can be a lot of fun, but they can also be quite crowded and noisy, so it's something to keep in mind if you're considering living in the city center. Siena has a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. If you're not used to this type of climate, it might take some time to adjust. Finally, it's important to understand the Italian tax system. Italy has a worldwide taxation policy, which means that if you become a resident, you'll be taxed on your global income. It's recommended to consult with a tax advisor before making the move," remarked another expat who made the move to Siena, Italy.
