What do I need to know before retiring in Siargao Island?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Siargao Island, they said...

"Expats considering retirement in Siargao Island should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, but it's important to have a reliable source of income or savings. The official language is Filipino, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. Healthcare facilities on the island are basic, so it's recommended to have health insurance that covers medical evacuation in case of serious illness or injury. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from November to January, and a dry season from March to October. The island is known for its laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty, including world-class surfing spots, pristine beaches, and lush landscapes. However, it's less developed than other parts of the Philippines, which means fewer amenities and services. The Philippines has a retirement visa program that allows foreigners to live in the country indefinitely, but there are certain financial requirements to meet. It's also important to note that foreign ownership of land is prohibited in the Philippines, but there are ways around this, such as leasing land or buying a condominium. Safety can be a concern in some parts of the Philippines, but Siargao is generally considered safe for expats. However, it's always important to stay aware of your surroundings and take basic safety precautions. Finally, integrating into the local community and respecting local customs and traditions is key to enjoying a fulfilling retirement in Siargao," wrote a member who made the move to Siargao Island, Philippines.
