What do I need to know before moving to Koh Lanta?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Koh Lanta, they said...

"Koh Lanta is a beautiful island that offers a relaxed lifestyle, but there are a few things expats should know before moving there. The cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, but it's higher than in other parts of Thailand due to its popularity with tourists. The island is less developed than other tourist destinations in Thailand, which means fewer amenities and services. Healthcare facilities are limited on the island, with the nearest hospital located in Krabi, a two-hour boat ride away. The local language is Thai, and while some locals speak English, it's beneficial to learn some basic Thai phrases. The island is predominantly Muslim, so it's important to respect local customs and dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. The weather in Koh Lanta is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October. The island is prone to power outages, especially during the rainy season, so it's a good idea to have a backup plan for electricity. Transportation on the island is mainly by motorbike or tuk-tuk, and there's no public transportation system. The island's infrastructure is not as developed, so roads can be in poor condition, especially in the rainy season. Internet service can be unreliable, which could be a problem for those working remotely. It's also important to note that the island's laid-back lifestyle might not suit everyone, especially those used to a fast-paced city life. Finally, while Koh Lanta is generally safe, it's still important to take standard precautions to protect yourself and your belongings," remarked another expat in Koh Lanta, Thailand.
