What do I need to know before moving to Hobart?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Hobart, they said...

"Before moving to Hobart, expats should know that it is the capital city of the island state of Tasmania, known for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and a slower pace of life compared to other Australian cities. The cost of living in Hobart is generally lower than in other major Australian cities, but it has been increasing due to a recent surge in popularity. Hobart has a temperate maritime climate, with four distinct seasons, and it can get quite cold in winter. The city is known for its high-quality fresh produce, seafood, and wines, and has a thriving food and drink scene. Public transportation in Hobart is not as extensive as in larger cities, so having a car can be beneficial, especially for exploring the surrounding areas. However, the city is quite walkable, and cycling is also a popular mode of transport. Hobart's healthcare system is excellent, with a range of public and private hospitals and clinics. Expats should ensure they have adequate health insurance, as Australia's Medicare system may not cover them. The city is home to a number of good schools, both public and private, and the University of Tasmania is based here. Hobart has a strong arts scene, with the famous Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) being a major drawcard. The city also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year, including the popular Taste of Tasmania food festival and the Dark Mofo winter festival. While Hobart is generally a safe city, like any place, it has areas that are safer than others, so expats should research neighborhoods thoroughly before choosing where to live. Finally, expats should be aware that while Hobart is a small city, it offers a high quality of life, with plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, such as hiking and sailing, thanks to its stunning natural surroundings," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Hobart, Australia.
