What do I need to know before moving to Taveuni?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Taveuni, they said...

"Taveuni is known as the "Garden Island" due to its lush vegetation and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The official language is English, but the local language, Fijian, is also widely spoken, so learning a few basic phrases could be beneficial. The local currency is the Fijian dollar and it's advisable to have some cash on hand as not all places accept credit cards. The cost of living in Taveuni is relatively low compared to many Western countries, but imported goods can be expensive. The island has a tropical rainforest climate, so it's important to be prepared for high temperatures and humidity, as well as frequent rainfall. Taveuni is a small island with a population of around 9,000 people, so it offers a slower, more relaxed pace of life. The island is not heavily populated, so expats should be prepared for a quieter lifestyle with fewer amenities than in a city. Healthcare facilities on the island are limited, with only a few small hospitals and clinics, so it's important to have comprehensive health insurance. It's also recommended to get vaccinations for diseases like typhoid and hepatitis A before moving. The island is known for its outdoor activities, including diving, hiking, and bird-watching, so it's a great place for nature lovers. However, it's important to be aware of the local wildlife, as there are several species of poisonous snakes on the island. Fijian culture is deeply rooted in community and family values, and respect for elders is paramount. It's important to respect local customs and traditions, which include removing shoes before entering a home and dressing modestly. Internet access can be limited and slower than what many expats may be used to, so this is something to consider if you rely heavily on the internet for work or communication. Finally, while Fiji is generally a safe country, it's still important to take standard precautions to protect your personal safety and belongings," remarked another expat in Taveuni, Fiji.
