What do I need to know before moving to Denarau Island?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Denarau Island, they said...

"Denarau Island, is a popular destination for expats due to its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and friendly locals. Before moving to Denarau Island, it's important to understand the cost of living, which can be higher than in other parts of Fiji due to its status as a tourist destination. The official language is English, but the local dialect, Fijian, is also widely spoken. Learning a few basic phrases in Fijian can be helpful and appreciated by the locals. The island is known for its luxury resorts and villas, so housing options may be more limited and expensive compared to other areas. However, the amenities and services provided often justify the cost. Healthcare facilities in Fiji are adequate for routine problems, but serious conditions may require evacuation to Australia or New Zealand. Therefore, comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation is highly recommended. The Fijian culture is deeply rooted in community and respect for others. It's important to understand and respect local customs and traditions. The climate is tropical with a warm and wet season from November to April and a cooler, drier season from May to October. It's important to be prepared for tropical storms and cyclones, which can occur during the wet season. While Fiji is generally safe, petty crime can be an issue. It's advisable to take standard precautions to protect your belongings. The island is well-connected with the mainland by a causeway, making it easy to explore other parts of Fiji. Finally, while Fiji has a laid-back lifestyle, it's important to remember that work permits are required for expats planning to work in the country," remarked another expat who made the move to Denarau Island, Fiji.
