What do I need to know before moving to Mamanuca Islands?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Mamanuca Islands, they said...

"Expats moving to the Mamanuca Islands in Fiji should be aware that the official language is English, but Fijian and Hindi are also widely spoken. The cost of living can be high, especially for imported goods, due to the islands' remote location. The islands have a tropical climate, with a warm, wet season from November to April and a cooler, dry season from May to October. Healthcare facilities in the Mamanuca Islands are limited, so expats may need to travel to the mainland for more serious medical issues. Expats should also ensure they have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The islands are generally safe, but petty crime can occur, so expats should take standard precautions to protect their belongings. The Mamanuca Islands are prone to cyclones, particularly between November and April, so expats should be prepared for potential natural disasters. The islands have a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle, which can be a big adjustment for expats used to a faster pace of life. The local culture is deeply rooted in community and tradition, and expats should make an effort to understand and respect these traditions. Public transportation is limited on the islands, so expats may need to rely on boats or private transportation. Internet and mobile phone coverage can be patchy, particularly on more remote islands. The Mamanuca Islands have a strong focus on tourism, so job opportunities for expats may be limited to this industry. Finally, expats should be aware that Fiji has strict quarantine laws to protect its agriculture and wildlife, so there are restrictions on what can be brought into the country," commented one expat who made the move to Mamanuca Islands, Fiji.
