What do I need to know before moving to Santa Lucia?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Santa Lucia, they said...

"Santa Lucia is a small, picturesque town located near the capital city of Tegucigalpa in Honduras. It is known for its colonial-style architecture, cobblestone streets, and a tranquil, relaxed lifestyle. Before moving to Santa Lucia, expats should know that Spanish is the primary language spoken in Honduras. While some locals may speak English, it would be beneficial to learn Spanish or have a basic understanding of the language. The cost of living in Santa Lucia is relatively low compared to many Western countries. However, the average income is also lower, so it's important to have a reliable source of income or savings. The healthcare system in Honduras is not as advanced as in some Western countries. Private healthcare is available and is generally of a higher standard than public healthcare. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. Safety can be a concern in Honduras, which has one of the highest crime rates in Latin America. However, Santa Lucia is considered one of the safer areas in the country. It's still important to take precautions, such as avoiding displaying signs of wealth and not walking alone at night. The climate in Santa Lucia is tropical, with a wet and dry season. It can get quite hot and humid, especially during the wet season. It's advisable to have accommodations with air conditioning or at least fans. Public transportation in Santa Lucia and the rest of Honduras is not very reliable or comfortable. Many expats choose to drive, but be aware that driving conditions can be challenging due to poorly maintained roads and erratic driving habits of locals. The food in Santa Lucia is a mix of traditional Honduran cuisine and international dishes. Local markets are a great place to buy fresh produce, but it's recommended to wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating to avoid foodborne illnesses. Finally, it's important to understand and respect the local culture and customs. Hondurans are generally warm and friendly, but they also value their traditions and social norms. It's advisable to learn about these cultural aspects to integrate more easily into the community," said another expat in Santa Lucia, Honduras.
