"Expats considering retirement in Jumeirah should be aware that the cost of living can be high, particularly for housing and schooling. They should also know that the official language is Arabic, although English is widely spoken. However, expats should be aware that they cannot become permanent residents or citizens, regardless of how long they live in the country. The UAE is a Muslim country, and public observance of other religions is restricted. Alcohol is available, but its consumption is regulated and it is illegal to be drunk in public. Finally, expats should know that the UAE has strict laws on personal debt. Unpaid debt is a criminal offence, and can result in imprisonment or a travel ban," remarked another expat in Jumeirah, the UAE.
