How are healthcare services in Kampala?
When we asked expats and global nomads about the quality of medical care in Kampala, they replied...
"Healthcare services in Kampala, are a mix of public and private facilities, with the public sector being the primary provider of healthcare services. The city is home to Mulago National Referral Hospital, which is the largest public hospital in the country and serves as a referral center for specialized medical care. There are also several regional referral hospitals and lower-level health centers that cater to the healthcare needs of the city's residents. In addition to public facilities, there are numerous private hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies that offer a range of healthcare services. Some of these private facilities are well-equipped and staffed by qualified medical professionals, providing high-quality care to patients. However, the cost of services at private facilities can be quite high, making them inaccessible to many residents. Despite the availability of healthcare facilities, Kampala faces several challenges in providing adequate healthcare services to its population. These challenges include inadequate funding, a shortage of qualified medical personnel, and limited access to essential medicines and medical equipment. Additionally, the city's healthcare system struggles with the burden of both communicable and non-communicable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and diabetes. Efforts are being made to improve healthcare services in Kampala, with the government and international organizations investing in infrastructure, training, and capacity building. These initiatives aim to enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare services for the city's residents, ensuring that they can lead healthy and productive lives," remarked another expat who made the move to Kampala, Uganda.
