Are healthcare and health insurance expensive in Valle de Los Chillos?
When we asked expats in Valle de Los Chillos if healthcare and health insurance are expensive in Valle de Los Chillos, they wrote...
"We have SaludSA, mainly because during the big covid, there were a lot of problems. We had a family member, healthy in 30s, who had covid and his oxygen levels were very low so he needed to go to the hospital. There was no room in the hospital so had to go to a private clinic just to get oxygen. $1000 per day, there for 10 days. So we got $30,000 coverage to be sure we could have 30 days in a clinic if needed, ages 59 and 61. Medical insurance is like USA car insurance, lots of levels of coverage and options. Hard to say how much for a couple. Before covid, ours was about $100 each per month for $30,000 coverage. Now it is about $150 or so per month each for the same coverage. As your age increases, you will find it increases. So hard to say if the increase is due to insurance coverage of covid and associated losses or just both of us over 60 now. There is no focus on preventative care, screenings and such here. When you are sick ENOUGH you go to the doctor. We pay out of pocket for screenings ourselves, recent mammogram was about $30. Colonoscopy with anesthesia was about $100 or so. The doctors will often help with some preventative by giving a potential diagnosis of a treatable problem that allows some blood work, etc. They are used to the system," explained one expat living in Valle de Los Chillos, Ecuador.
