As a foreigner living in Alicante, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Alicante if they have access to public healthcare in Alicante. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Alicante, you will have access to public healthcare. Spain has a well-developed healthcare system, and it is generally of a high standard. The public healthcare system in Spain is free at the point of use for anyone living and working in the country. However, it's important to note that while emergency treatment is available to all, non-residents or those without a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) may be charged for their care. The healthcare system in Spain is modern and doctors and nurses are well-trained. Many healthcare professionals speak English, especially in larger cities and tourist areas. However, in more rural areas, it might be more challenging to find English-speaking staff. Pharmacies are widely available and are easily identifiable by a large green cross outside. They stock a good range of medication, including many drugs that would only be available on prescription in other countries. Dental care in Spain is not covered by the public healthcare system and must be paid for privately. However, the cost of dental care is generally lower than in many other European countries. Overall, Spain's healthcare system is considered one of the best in the world, and as a resident, you should be able to access the care you need. However, it's always a good idea to have comprehensive health insurance to cover any potential costs," said a member in Alicante, Spain.
