As a foreigner living in Bilbao, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Bilbao if they have access to public healthcare in Bilbao. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"Yes, as a foreigner living in Bilbao, Spain, you will have access to public healthcare. Spain has a universal healthcare system, which means that all residents, including foreigners, have the right to access healthcare services. The healthcare system in Spain is highly regarded, with excellent standards of care and modern facilities. It is funded through social security contributions, ensuring that healthcare is free at the point of delivery. In Bilbao, as in the rest of Spain, you will find a network of health centers and hospitals providing a wide range of services. Primary care is provided by general practitioners, while specialists are available for more specific health issues. Emergency services are also available 24/7. However, it's important to note that while many healthcare professionals speak English, this is not always the case. Therefore, it may be beneficial to learn some basic Spanish medical terms or to bring a translator if you're not fluent in Spanish. In terms of paperwork, you will need to register with the local health authority and obtain a health card (tarjeta sanitaria individual or TSI) to access services. If you're from a European Union country, you should also bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Overall, the public healthcare system in Bilbao is comprehensive and accessible, providing a high standard of care to all residents," said a member in Bilbao , Spain.
