As a foreigner living in Hue, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Hue if they have access to public healthcare in Hue. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Hue, you will have access to public healthcare, but it's important to note that the quality and standards may not be the same as what you're used to in your home country. The public healthcare system in Vietnam is generally underfunded and understaffed, which can lead to long wait times and a lack of specialized care. Many public hospitals in Vietnam, including those in Hue, are often crowded and the language barrier can also be a challenge as not all staff may speak English. While basic treatments and consultations are available, the equipment may not be as advanced as in Western countries. For serious or complex medical issues, you may need to travel to larger cities like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or even out of the country. It's also worth noting that while public healthcare is available to foreigners, it's not free. You will be expected to pay for services, and the cost can vary widely depending on the treatment. Many expats and long-term visitors choose to get private health insurance to help cover these costs. In terms of pharmacies, they are widely available and most common medications can be purchased over the counter without a prescription. However, it's recommended to bring a supply of any necessary prescription medications from your home country, as not all may be available in Vietnam. Overall, while public healthcare is accessible in Hue, it's advisable for foreigners to have a comprehensive health insurance plan to ensure they can access the best care possible," said another expat in Vietnam.
