As a foreigner living in Phnom Penh, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Phnom Penh if they have access to public healthcare in Phnom Penh. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"As a foreigner living in Phnom Penh, you will have access to public healthcare, but it's important to note that the quality and availability of services may not be up to the standards you're accustomed to in your home country. The public healthcare system in Cambodia has been improving over the years, but it still faces challenges such as a lack of resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a shortage of trained medical professionals. Many public hospitals in Phnom Penh are often overcrowded and may not have the necessary equipment or medication. In addition, there may be language barriers as not all medical staff speak English. It's also worth noting that public healthcare in Cambodia is not free, and while it's cheaper than private healthcare, the costs can still add up, especially for more serious treatments or procedures. Many expatriates and wealthier Cambodians prefer to use private clinics and hospitals, which offer a higher standard of care but at a significantly higher cost. Some foreigners also choose to have health insurance that covers medical evacuation, as serious medical issues often require treatment in a neighboring country like Thailand or Singapore. In conclusion, while you will have access to public healthcare in Phnom Penh, it's advisable to have a good health insurance plan and to consider using private healthcare for more serious health issues," said another expat in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
