As a foreigner living in Bamberg, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Bamberg if they have access to public healthcare in Bamberg. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Bamberg, you will have access to public healthcare. Germany has one of the most comprehensive healthcare systems in the world, with high standards of care. The system is funded by statutory health insurance (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung - GKV) which covers a wide range of treatments and is accepted by almost all doctors and hospitals in Germany. As a resident in Germany, you are required by law to have health insurance. If you are employed and earn less than a certain threshold, you will be automatically enrolled into the GKV. If you earn more than the threshold, you have the option to choose between GKV and private health insurance (Private Krankenversicherung - PKV). The public healthcare system in Germany covers most medical treatments and prescription medications. It also includes dental care, rehabilitation, and sick leave compensation. However, there might be some additional costs for certain services, such as private rooms in hospitals or some non-prescription drugs. The quality of healthcare in Germany is very high. Doctors are well-trained and facilities are modern and well-equipped. Most doctors and medical staff speak English, especially in larger cities. However, in smaller towns like Bamberg, it might be more challenging to find English-speaking doctors. In terms of access, you usually need to make an appointment in advance for non-emergency situations. For emergencies, you can go to the emergency room or call the emergency number. Overall, the public healthcare system in Germany is reliable and provides good coverage. However, it can be a bit bureaucratic and the waiting times for certain treatments can be long," commented one expat who made the move to Bamberg, Germany.
