In major cities like Santa Marta, public hospitals and clinics are generally well-equipped and staffed with trained medical professionals. However, the public healthcare system in Colombia is known to be underfunded and overcrowded, which can lead to long wait times for non-emergency procedures. In terms of coverage, Colombia's public healthcare system, known as EPS (Entidades Promotoras de Salud), covers a wide range of services, from routine check-ups and preventive care to hospital stays and surgeries. However, some services may require a co-payment, and not all medications are covered. While the public healthcare system is available to all residents, including foreigners, many expats choose to supplement it with private health insurance. This can provide access to private hospitals and clinics, which often have shorter wait times and more modern facilities. Overall, while the public healthcare system in Santa Marta, Colombia, has its challenges, it is generally considered to be of decent quality, particularly in larger cities.
