As a foreigner living in Manizales, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Manizales if they have access to public healthcare in Manizales. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Manizales, you will have access to public healthcare. Colombia has a universal healthcare system, which means that all residents, including foreigners, have the right to access healthcare services. However, to access these services, you must be enrolled in the healthcare system, either through a contributory scheme (if you are employed) or a subsidized scheme (if you are unemployed or cannot afford to pay). The quality of public healthcare in Colombia is generally good, with the country ranking highly in global healthcare quality indices. The healthcare system is well-organized, with a wide range of services available, from general practitioners to specialists and hospital care. However, like any public healthcare system, it can be subject to long waiting times for non-emergency procedures. In Manizales, there are several public hospitals and clinics where you can access healthcare services. These include the Caldas University Hospital, the San Isidro Hospital, and the Manizales Clinic, among others. These facilities are equipped to handle a wide range of medical issues, from routine check-ups to emergencies and complex surgeries. However, it's important to note that while public healthcare is available to all, many expats and wealthier Colombians choose to supplement it with private health insurance. This is because private healthcare often offers faster access to specialists, shorter waiting times, and sometimes a higher standard of care. Private healthcare in Colombia is also relatively affordable compared to many other countries. In terms of pharmacies, you'll find many throughout Manizales, where you can buy over-the-counter medication and prescription drugs. Some pharmacies also offer home delivery services. Overall, while the public healthcare system in Manizales, and Colombia more broadly, is not without its challenges, it is generally accessible and provides a good standard of care. As a foreigner, you should have no problem accessing the healthcare services you need, provided you are enrolled in the system," explained one expat living in Manizales, Colombia.
